7 Ways to Make Your Apartment Cat-Friendly
Many would say that cats are self-sufficient and don’t require the same amount of attention as dogs. Although they are more solo players, cats also need special conditions to share our home. Once worshipped as sacred beings by the ancient Egyptians, today they are also loved and nurtured as family members. This means that you have to create a safe and cat-friendly environment in your apartment to avoid injuries or mishaps which are bound to happen with our feline friends.
1. Indoor garden
Apartments are the toughest for cats since they are complicated for growing plants. However, catnip and cat grass don’t require much. All you need are some pots and a convenient place in the sun, and soon enough your cat will enjoy some greenery of its own.
2. Scratching post
A scratching post is mandatory if you want to protect the furniture. Cats need a place to sharpen their claws. That’s their instinct and they don’t do it on purpose. There is a variety of scratching posts on the market suitable for any size of apartment. You can even make your own with a wooden pillar and rope.
3. Window seats
One of the favourite daily activities of your cat will be looking out the window. So instead of placing plants or any other decorations, make it a soft and comfortable spot for your cat with some cushions. If you don’t have a window sill, make a perch. Use a cat basket and strong rope to hang it on the window. And soon enough, this will be your cat’s most favourite place in the whole apartment.
Cats like to hide somewhere and nap in peace. You’ve probably found them napping in your closet, washing machine and even bowls on top of the closet many times. So, to make them feel welcome, buy them the so-called cat caves. These are stand-alone cat houses which are made of comfortable materials and provide privacy for your cat.
Every cat must have toys. Cats are animals that like to play and keeping them occupied with toys will also keep them out of trouble. There is a variety of cat toys on the market, but you can also make your own. Anything that makes a sound or moves when touched, like a ball, will be great for your feline companion.
6. Protect your things
Unintentionally, your cat can destroy things around the house. You may have to get creative, so next time you're out shopping, keep an eye out for items that can cat-proof your decor and furniture while still looking attractive. Cats have been known to climb fabric curtains, so consider alternative curtains Perth, Sydney, Melbourne and what the big city stores have to offer. Make sure that all breakable items are secured and out of your cat’s reach.
Remove plants poisonous to cats from your home, or replace them with animal-friendly ones. Make sure your TV is securely positioned so it won’t fall down when your cat lies on it. Hide all trailing electrical cables securely under carpets, or tape them to the floor or wall. A thick, cable protector can also be placed over the cables, to make them chew-proof. Remove or shorten hanging tablecloths, cats are experts at clearing a fully-laid table!
7. Cat shelves
Cat shelves will be a great source of fun for your feline friend. You can place them on the wall and connect them with climbing boards so the cat can easily go from one shelf to another. If you don’t have enough space on the wall, you can buy cat climbers. They not only come in different shapes and sizes, but some also have ingenious designs resembling castles and can also serve as cat caves.
In the end
There is nothing cuter than cuddling with your cat and listening to it purr. Just like you like to feel comfortable, you want to help your pet enjoy its forever home. Cats may not be worshipped as deities today, but we sure like to treat them that way. And all it takes are just a few adjustments and love to share your apartment with them.
